David’s work as an intellectual property (I. P.) attorney is a culmination of his lifelong interest in “how things work.”  Growing up, he would regularly disassemble and rebuild bicycles, small engines, power tools and just about anything he could get his hands on.  His continued interest led him to qualify for a computer-numerically-controlled machinist apprenticeship after high school and earn a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign.

 

Upon graduation from college, David worked as a mechanical engineer and project manager for seven years in Chicago within the field of facility and infrastructure design; to include projects relating to the design or retrofit of nuclear power generation facilities for Commonwealth Edison, research facilities at Argonne National Laboratory and heavy rail subway infrastructure for the Chicago Transit Authority.

 

During the final four years of his engineering tenure, David attended evening school at the John Marshall Law School of Chicago, earning a Juris Doctor Degree with an emphasis in intellectual property law.  While in law school, David was a publications editor for the John Marshall Journal of Information, Technology and Privacy Law (prestigious honors journal) and a published author of an article addressing Internet commercialism and anti-trust law. David gained his initial patent litigation experience as a Judicial Extern for the Honorable Ronald J. Guzman, a federal judge for the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division, where he assisted the Court in interpreting and deciding complex patent infringement issues.

 

During his final year of law school, David clerked at an intellectual property law firm in Chicago, later joining the firm as an associate upon graduation.  There, he gained valuable patent, trademark and copyright legal experience, both in the filing and prosecution of applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (U.S.P.T.O.) and the litigation of infringement matters.

 

In 2004, David started his own law practice to offer a unique blend of professional and personable legal services to individuals and companies seeking intellectual property assistance.  In doing so, he minimizes overhead in an effort to pass cost savings to his clients, and is immediately available to his clients via direct phone calls, minus the “suit-and-tie” and costly formalities of traditional law firms.

 

Unlike many intellectual property attorneys, David is proficient in technical drafting.  This ability has benefited his clients under deadline pressure, when technical drawings are required for immediate patent application filings but outside draftsman services are unavailable.  Also, David's years of engineering experience allows him to understand the technologies underlying patent applications “cold,” having thus prepared and filed numerous U.S. and foreign patent applications for complex machinery and tools, computer-based business methods and reverse osmosis systems, just to name a few.

 

David is admitted to practice law in Illinois (to include the Northern District of Illinois Trial Bar), Wisconsin, and before the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.  He is also a registered patent agent for the U.S.P.T.O., giving him the ability to file and prosecute patent applications there.  As such, he has argued numerous matters before both U.S. District Court and U.S.P.T.O. Trademark Trial and Appeal Board judges, as well as briefed complex matters before the Federal Circuit (currently awaiting oral argument).      

 

When not practicing law, David enjoys spending time with his family, as well as practicing jiu-jitsu and competitive grappling, running, renovating an old home, and partaking in numerous outdoor activities.
